Start with one honest sentence. "God, I do not know how to pray" is already a prayer. Christian prayer does not require a special tone, a perfect mood or complete certainty.
Read Matthew 6:5–13 in a translation you understand. Jesus warns against prayer as performance and then gives a pattern often called the Lord's Prayer. Notice the concerns it holds: God's name and will, daily provision, forgiveness, temptation and protection.
Try this for one minute
Address God. Name one true thing about the moment. Ask for one form of help. End with gratitude for one specific gift, however small.
You might say: "God, I am anxious about tomorrow. Give me wisdom for the conversation I need to have. Thank you for the friend who checked on me." Your tradition may use a different ending or set form. Follow it.
If your mind wanders, return without scolding yourself. Distraction often reveals what occupies you. Write the thought down, decide whether it belongs in the prayer, and continue.
Use Scripture as a starting point
Pick a short paragraph rather than opening the Bible at random. Read the surrounding section. Turn one observation into a response: praise, confession, thanks, a request or a question.
The Psalms can help because they include joy, anger, fear and lament. Psalm 13 offers language for waiting; Psalm 23 speaks of trust; Psalm 51 models confession. Read each in context and resist the urge to make every line about the immediate situation.
When prayer feels empty
Feelings may not arrive on command. A dry practice can still be honest. Set prayers, silent prayer and prayer with another person can carry you when spontaneous words feel impossible.
If shame or fear makes prayer unbearable, talk with a trusted pastor or counsellor who will not exploit that fear. If distress creates a risk of harm, contact local emergency or crisis help now.
Try the one-minute form at the same time for seven days. Keep it small. The next step is consistency, not performance.
